There are hundreds of parks and recreation areas managed by the City of San Diego and in general, they can be categorized into being a Regional park or a Neighborhood park or recreation area. An overview of the parks is provided below.
City of San Diego Regional Parks:
The larger San Diego parks are considered to be Regional Parks and include the following:
- Balboa Park
- Mission Bay Park
- Presidio Park, and
- Shoreline Parks
The Shoreline Parks include Calumet Park in P.B./La Jolla, Cuvier Park or "Wedding Bowl" Park in La Jolla, Scripps Park in La Jolla, Sunset Cliffs Park, Luscombs Point in O.B., and Ladera Street Park in O.B.
While all of these regional parks offer beautiful settings for parties and gatherings, only Mission Bay Park allows inflatable jump houses. If you are having 75 people at your event, or if you're having any special equipment (e.g. inflatable jump, dunk tank, large canopy, etc), you will need to obtain a permit from the permit center located in the Balboa Park Administration Building at 2125 Park Boulevard.

Mission Bay Park - the largest man-made aquatic park in the country, covering 4,235 acres, Mission Bay is a popular year-round outdoor recreation and party venue and because inflatable jump houses are allowed, it has become a favorite for many kids parties over the years. As of January, 2008, alcohol is no longer allowed in Mission Bay Park, which may make it more enjoyable for children's parties. All of the permit sites have nearby restroom facilities and water access.
NOTE: The key thing to know about having a party in Mission Bay Park, is that although you have a permit for a general area in the park, that does not guarantee you a specifically designated space as the actual locations are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Groups of less than 75 people do not need a permit and have equal access to the prime locations. We've seem numerous occasions of people sleeping overnight or arriving before daybreak to reserve a prime gazebo area, shade location, or other specially desirable area.
City of San Diego Community, Neighborhood, Mini-Parks and Lake Grounds
San Diego has hundreds of smaller parks and it's sometimes a challenge to find the right location to contact for a permit application because the neighborhood parks and recreation areas are all managed separately. In general, once you select which neighborhood park you want to use for your party or picnic, then the best option is to contact the nearest Recreation Center to that park to inquire about availability and permits. For example, if you want to book a party at Kate Sessions Park, which is in the 92109 zip code, then you would call the Pacific Beach Recreation Center to check availability and to submit a permit application. This is not a precise process as you're going to have to apply a bit of local knowledge to recognize that the P.B. Recreation Center is closer to Kate Sessions Park than the Santa ClaraRecreation Center, which is in the same zip code
